Uganda Mission Update

It’s been said that ‘God doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called.’ Thank God because none of us are truly qualified to carry out the mission that He has given us, to reach all nations, tribes, and tongues with the gospel message: “But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God” (1 Corinthians 1:27-29). We merely seek to be obedient to what our Lord and Savior has called us to do and that is; take the Good News of Jesus to all the nations, baptize them, teach them the word of God, pray for the hurting, care for the outcast, widows, and orphans, love our enemies…and much, much more, NOT FOR salvation but BECAUSE we are saved by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8-10). We are so, so grateful that God has allowed us the privilege of serving Him at home and abroad.

On Wednesday, July 10, Ed Young, Austin Sexton, Maddie Emmerson, and myself headed to Uganda for a 2-week mission trip. Our flight out of Washington was delayed by an hour and a half because of bad weather but we still arrived on time in Entebbe and all of our supplies; reading-glasses, books, shoes, and audio bibles made it through customs, thankfully. Our ministry began right away with a visit to the slums in Kampala where our friend and head of SASCU orphanage, Brother Innocent, feeds about 100 young street children 2 days a week.

On our first Sunday, our team was all together and we participated in the celebration of the new Bembe Baptist Church building with singing, dancing, preaching, baptizing, and a great meal. Members and leaders of all 3 churches (Cornerstone, New Life, and Bembe) were there to celebrate in this occasion. The Lord has been so good to us in providing the funds, from donors like you, to construct this beautiful building where Bembe Baptist Church can worship, rain or shine.

After the celebration, Ed and Maddie headed north to Luwero where they spent the next 5 days ministering to the needs of SASCU (Save Street Children Uganda) Orphanage helping with VBS, skills training, and purchasing more cows so the children will have fresh milk every day. On Monday, Austin and myself went to Masaka to visit ‘Liberty School,’ a ministry partner of Cornerstone Community Church, and saw the great work that they are doing teaching the children about Jesus, who came to ‘seek and save the lost.’ Austin and I then spent Tuesday ministering in Kibajjwe door to door and helping with bible study then on Wednesday, we went to join Ed and Maddie at the orphanage to help baptize over 50 people…including Maddie. The next 3 days, Ed and Maddie traveled to Kisoro to minister to the Batwa Pigmies while Austin and myself helped evangelize our newest church plant in Ndejje. It was very eye opening that as we went door to door and talked with people on the streets, we found a hunger for true Christianity. Many told us that they were born again but had no church in the village and many in the prosperity movement came with fancy suits and big cars to carry out crusades but then left after a few days of getting offerings from the people and giving them false promises. We also noticed that the Muslim population are not knowledgeable of the Quran or their beliefs and also listened as we shared the gospel of Jesus with them. On Sunday, our team joined back together at Ndejje for the very first worship service at ‘New Life Baptist Church Uganda’ under 2 large white tents. It was truly a wonderful service with singing, dancing, testimonies, and preaching from the word of God. Now that the land has been purchased, the latrine built, we will soon start construction on the only church in Ndejje sponsored by ‘New Life Baptist Church’ of Danville, Kentucky.
