Uganda Trip Update
On July 7th, our team: Gary Burkett, Mickey Jones, Ed Young, and myself, headed back to Uganda for a two-week visit to Bombo as well as Tororo in the Eastern part of the country. After exiting the plane in Entebbe, we realized that we were missing 4 pieces of luggage; 3 medical bags and the portable baptistry for the prison ministry. The airport staff assured us that as soon as the 4 bags arrived, they would contact us so that we could pick them up…so we began praying for these bags to arrive quickly and safely. The next morning, we all headed to Kitalya Prison, west of Kampala, to baptize over 130 prisoners who recently came to follow Jesus. Since the portable baptistry was still sitting on a plane ‘somewhere,’ the prisoners actually came together and constructed a make-shift baptistry just for this occasion. The prison church is very organized with a lead pastor and many trained pastors/leaders under him who serve in various locations of the prison to make sure that those who come to Christ are properly discipled.
After spending the majority of the day at the prison, Gary and Mickey headed to Tororo while Ed and I left for Bombo. The Tororo team spent much of their time visiting prisons as well as hospitals and HIV clinics. In Bombo, we worshipped with the young people at Bombo Secondary School and helped lead a 2-day discipleship conference at the Sambwe Community Church with Pastor Karim. On Tuesday, the missing luggage arrived in-tact so we made a ‘not-so quick’ trip back to Entebbe to retrieve our valuable and much needed items. We also stopped at a local pharmacy to purchase medications such as antibiotics, pain medicines, alcohol wipes, and cremes for Wednesday’s hospital visit. The next day, we visited Sambwe Hospital and were greeted by over 200 villagers and all of the hospital staff. The focal point of the event was a visit by the area medical doctor, Dr. Innocent, a Christian physician who oversees 101 hospitals and clinics in the Luwero District of Uganda. They were extremely excited and grateful for the 4 bags of medical equipment donated by SOS Health in Louisville, the medicines that we purchased, and, of course, the meal that was provided for all who came.
On Thursday, Pastor Karim, Ed, and myself headed to Tororo to meet up with Gary and Mickey where we spent the next several days visiting 2 local hospitals sharing the gospel and praying for the sick, visiting Living Word school to see their new health clinic, vocational school, and church building, and ministering at the Tororo Prison where we baptized over 180 prisoners. It is always amazing to see God at work in the prisons, hospitals, and schools and it’s even more exciting that our God has allowed us to be a part of His work redeeming mankind to Himself.
Bombo Mission Update
‘Godly Seed Nursery and Primary School’ is officially underway with the ground breaking on Monday, August 1st. It will be a two-story building with 4 classrooms on each floor to accommodate several grades at one time. There is another public, non-Christian, school in the area which is very expensive for the village children to attend so this school will be primarily for the poorer children of Sambwe. We are so excited to see God moving in this village to meet to physical and spiritual needs of the people, in the name of Jesus our Savior.
Ukraine Mission Update
Though we may not be hearing as much about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on the news these days, rockets and aircraft are still flying over Vizhnitsa with air-raid sirens blaring and refugees seeking to flee the country headed to Poland, Hungary and Slovakia. Pastor Paul Dudka remains faithful in meeting the many needs of those fleeing to the West with housing in the church basement, clothes, food, and other life sustaining support. Even though his country is in the midst of war, he still carries out ministry at Revival Baptist Church, his TV program is back on the air, new believers are still meeting for discipleship classes, and the ministry to the young people and children in the surrounding villages is stronger than ever.
During the month of July, Pastor Paul led an outreach in the mountains with a children’s summer camp of nearly 200 young people from a small village where the gospel has not yet gone as well as a 3-day youth camp to disciple nearly 50 young people. Also, a small group of young ‘new believers’ were learning to share the good news of Jesus at a special event called ‘Youth Soul Winning in the Mountains.’ During the month of August, they had another children’s camp in a remote village where there is little access to the gospel which was led by many of the new young converts who were baptized just weeks before. It began with just 56 children then more and more from the village came to hear the story of Jesus, and many parents came also. The summer ‘Kids Soul Winning Campaign’ resulted in over 730 children being reached with the gospel and nearly 100 deciding to follow Jesus as Lord and Savior. Praise the Lord.
UPCOMING TRIPS:
- October 5-20, 2022 – Brother Gary Burkett and myself will be traveling to Indonesia to minister with Pastor Yoel Sukardi on the island of Ambon where there are 4 unreached people groups who need to hear the gospel of Jesus.
- December 1-15, 2022 – We will be heading back to Uganda visiting both Bombo and Tororo. One of our goals is to have a medical camp day in the village of Sambwe as well as one of the local clinics in Tororo. We will also be visiting the Bunyaga Community Church as well as many prisons and hospitals with Kanisa’s Call Ministry.
