August 2021 Newsletter
Pastor Karim and Brenda send their greetings from Bombo, Uganda. On June 20, Gary Burkett, Joe Nail, and myself were scheduled to leave for Uganda for a two-week visit, BUT, just two weeks prior to our departure, President Museveni announced a 42-day lockdown due to another wave of the pandemic. This meant that schools, churches, and all public gatherings were to cease as well as travel between villages and even visitors from specific countries. On July 30, after the 42-day period, Museveni declared another 60-day extension of the lockdown, so it is going to be quite some time before the churches will be able to meet in person and the country opens up to visitors. Let’s just keep praying for Uganda as well as many other third-world countries struggling through this pandemic.
Though the lockdown has closed the church buildings, it has not stopped the movement of God in Bombo, ministry is still going strong, yet in different and creative ways. Sister Brenda has been teaching weekly literacy classes to young women in the community using the Bible as a textbook. Soon, they will be able to read God’s word for themselves and teach their children to read and write. Thanks to your donations, we helped Pastor Karim purchase a large chargeable PA system so that every Sunday, testimonies, lessons, and sermons can be proclaimed, not to the church but to the entire village. He also takes it to the surrounding villages of Sambwe, Kawala, and Nalwana to share the gospel during outreach events. Four people recently gave their lives to Jesus through this outreach, Amen.
After several months of small group meetings, the Sambwe Community Church, led by Badiru and Harriett, is now meeting as a body of Christ, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and obeying COVID guidelines as much as possible. Recently, 5 people were baptized into the Sambwe fellowship during a day of celebration…Praise the Lord.
Thanks to your support, we were able to send more funds to purchase food (rice, sugar, and corn) for the surrounding villages who have been struggling to support their families during the lockdown. According to Sister Brenda, this is by far the best means to establish a relationship with non-believers because “it shows that you truly care about them and their entire family, then when you share the gospel of Jesus Christ, they will listen to you.”
Though ‘God’s Love’ beauty shop (beauty saloon) is closed during the pandemic lockdown, the ‘Bunyaga Sewing Center’ is still having classes Monday through Friday for 3 hours daily. The women are learning to sew while taking various stitching jobs from the community to raise funds to purchase needed supplies. In just a couple of months the first class will graduate with a life-changing skill so that they will be able to start their own stitching business or get a job at a sewing center to help support their families, what a blessing!
