Uganda Mission Update
On January 24th our team: Ed Young, Joe Nail, Jennifer Durling, and myself, headed to Uganda for 10 full days of ministry with Brother Stanley and his team at Cornerstone Baptist Church and Bembe Baptist Church. Like most mission trips, nothing ever goes according to our well-planned itinerary, especially when our 2 medical equipment bags were confiscated at Entebbe International Airport upon arrival. I had all of the appropriate documentation in the bags but the airport staff wanted more, a lot more. They kept the bags and told us to ‘come back tomorrow’ and we could pick them up, unfortunately, they wanted more paperwork from SOS in Louisville (who supplied all of the equipment) listing everything that was in the bags as well as the license number of the clinic, head nurse, and much more. We got the required information and went to the NDA in downtown Kampala to pick them up only to be denied. Fortunately, we had 2 bags of medical equipment left at the Cornerstone Clinic from our previous trip in July so the Lord provided. With that start, we just learned to go with the flow, making time to visit an American Missionary Jordan K###Ki in Bombo who is translating the New Testament into Nubi to reach the 39,000 Nubians for Jesus. He has been there since last March and is picking up the language very quickly…he even had a stack of Nubian gospel tracts that he gave to one of our pastors who is a Nubian.
On Saturday morning, we visited Pastor Badru, who is a boda boda driver…aka taxi, and his wife Harriett, who is a seamstress, where we will be planting our third church, Grace Baptist Church in the village of Ndijji, a small village in Kakute. They showed us where they are presently meeting with about 20 people for bible study from the village and told us of their need for bibles and plastic chairs. From there we went to Bembe Baptist Church to lead a Baptismal Seminar for Sunday’s baptism service where we baptized 15 new believers in our homemade baptistry, and it was a beautiful sight indeed.
After the Sunday Baptismal Service, Brother Ed, being a cattle farmer, went to an orphanage in Luwero, about an hour and a half away, to give them some tips in farming. He remained there for a few days while we led the youth conference at Cornerstone Baptist Church. When they say ‘youth’ they mean anyone 12 to 65 so we had a full house where we began with praise and worship and then each of us shared a message relating to 2 Timothy 2:22, “Now flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.” After lunch, we were planning on breakout sessions but apparently, they wanted a Q and A panel time, so we answered questions about ‘why bad things happen to good people’ and ‘how do we know that we will not lose our salvation once truly born again’ as well as many more. These Q and A times are extremely helpful because they address the questions that the church members are really struggling with.
‘Save Street Children Uganda (SASCU),’ is an orphanage a short drive north of Bombo, Uganda where Brother Ed spent 3 days training the staff and workers how to select healthy cows, pigs, and chickens as well as testing the soil so they would know how to grow plenty of good crops for the 70 plus children. On Wednesday, we traveled to SASCU to pick up Brother Ed and then traveled to a nearby public pool where he, and the director of SASCU, Brother Innocent, baptized 28 young people who had given their lives to Jesus as Lord and Savior…it was a joyous time of celebration.
As always, we spent time going door to door sharing the gospel of Jesus with those we met and Shameem and her brother Muhammad gave their lives to Jesus right on the spot. They will now be attending Cornerstone Baptist Church to learn more about the Christian life and be discipled by Brother Stanley and his team. On Friday, we carried out our one-day medical camp where we treated over 270 villagers for illnesses, diseases, and injuries. After registering and going through triage, the people waited under a large white tent to see the medical providers, Jennifer Durling, NP and Dr. Solomon, as well as hear the gospel of Jesus Christ. Our hearts break when we see the hopelessness in the eyes of the people who live in absolute poverty and have little to no health care. We realize that we can’t help everyone but we merely do the best we can to meet the needs of ‘the least of these.’
Ukraine Mission Update
Pastor Paul and his family are just now, after a long two weeks, recovering from a terrible sickness. Previously, they had spent time visiting refugee and military families, as well as orphans, delivering food, medicines, and needed supplies and as always, sharing the Good News of Jesus, in surrounding villages. Since the Ukrainian army is frantically seeking more and more soldiers, Pastor Paul is worried that he will be forcefully recruited. Since he has 3 boys, he is supposed to be exempt from military service but as you know, things are getting desperate in this war-torn country.
