June 2023 Newsletter
UGANDA UPDATE
Cornerstone Baptist Church is taking the gospel to Kibajjwe village and meeting physical needs as well by providing fresh water from a well that is fully electric. Instead of the villagers coming every morning and pumping water by hand, the large water tank is filled each morning by an electric pump so all they have to do is turn a valve and get fresh water. The number one physical need of the villages surrounding Bombo, Uganda is fresh drinking water and according to water.org: “out of its population of 45 million people (Uganda), 38 million people (83% of the population) lack access to a reliable water source.”
With nearly 50 children coming to learn about Jesus every Sunday, there is a major need for them to have a place to meet, so on May 4, construction began on the Children’s Ministry Building/Health Clinic. Thanks to brother Ed Young and his generous donation, the building will be completed by mid-June and the children will begin meeting there every Sunday to learn about Jesus, the teen agers will meet during the week for bible study (and of course a soccer match), and the building will house a health clinic once a month to treat those with malaria, infections, diabetes, eye problems, dysentery, typhoid fever, and many other diseases and sicknesses. When we visit next month, we will celebrate the opening of the new health clinic by assisting with a 2-day health camp for those in Kibajjwe village on July 18 and 19.
One of the most important aspects of a healthy church anywhere in the world is a knowledge and understanding of the word of God and Cornerstone Baptist Church (CBC) is teaching its members to read it, know it, and trust it every day. Pastor Charles, Brother Stanley, as well as Loy and Agnes who lead the children’s ministry, all teach directly from the Bible to ensure that everyone knows what they believe and why they believe it. The Apostle Paul writing to Timothy says that, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
As with every church that is making disciples among unreached people groups, persecution is soon to come. Many of the women and children who are members of CBC are from a Muslim background, since 80% of the village follows Islam, and the fathers of the families are refusing to pay for their children to go to school. We are now seeking to raise funds, about $50 per child, to help them return to school so they will be able to receive an education, at least to primary 6. Also, Brother Stanley was warned to place a lock on the cover of the water well so that someone would not poison the drinking water. The Muslim Imams, the leaders of the mosque, definitely do not want a Christian church in their village so they will do anything to destroy the integrity of the church, even if it means harming innocent people.
On Friday, May 26, twenty-eight people were baptized in front of CBC with a large celebration with visitors from other churches that brother Stanley has planted throughout Uganda. Young and old alike made their profession of faith public by joining the church through the ordinance of water baptism. It was such an exciting time because baptism draws the line in the sand stating that they are leaving their old religion and now following Jesus with all their heart. Though many will be ridiculed and persecuted, they insist that they will never deny Jesus as Lord and Savior…because He is worth everything to them now.
On July 6th, Gary and Connie Burkett, Ed Young, Jennifer Durling, and myself will be traveling back to Bombo, Uganda taking medical equipment donated through SOS in Louisville for our 2-day medical camp as well as other much needed supplies such as a 9 Marks church leadership book set, to ensure that the churches are making healthy disciples, projectors to show the ‘Jesus Film,’ gospel tracts in Luganda for evangelism, and of course…soccer balls for the newly formed youth ministry. All of these supplies were made possible through your generous donations to ensure that the word of God will spread throughout Bombo, Uganda
More exciting news, by the second week of June, we will be purchasing land for our next church plant in a village much closer to Bombotown where we will be seeking to reach this Muslim village with the good news of Jesus. If things go according to plans, we will be constructing a church building there by the end of June and when we arrive in July, we will be going door-to-door seeking to meet physical needs, praying for the sick, and most importantly, sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. Please pray with us that the Holy Spirit will begin to soften hearts so that the gospel will be received and lives will be transformed.
UKRAINE MISSION UPDATE
In April, while Gary Burkett and myself were in India visiting with several of our ministry partners, Brother Joe Nail traveled to Vizhnitsa, Ukraine to visit with Pastor Paul Dudka, our ministry partner who pastors Revival Baptist Church. Pastor Paul decided to stay in Ukraine after the Russian invasion while most of the other pastors and missionaries fled the country. He is extremely busy now with his 4 church plants, teaching at a local bible college, and broadcasting sermons on a Christian radio station. Brother Joe spent nearly 2 weeks traveling with Pastor Paul to nearby villages to share the gospel and provide much needed food and clothing to villagers, encourage refugees who have lost everything due to the Russian invasion, and visit the many orphans whose families were killed in the eastern part of the country, primarily in Luhansk.
Please pray for Pastor Paul as he occasionally suffers from long-term side effects of Covid, his family who are trying to live a normal life in the midst of war, and his ministry which will be leading 5 kiddo camps this summer in the mountains surrounding Vizhnitsa, Ukraine.
